He and Delilah bid one another farewell, and Henry promises her that he will see his wife when he returns home, before he too evacuates. Henry makes his way to the extraction point at Delilah’s tower, and despite briefly considering asking she stay so they can properly meet, Henry decides to have Delilah evacuate first. Rather than head over to the rally point, Henry decides to follow the tracking unit and finds a tape from Ned, who explains that after his son’s death, guilt led him to stay out in the wilderness. Henry convinces Delilah the right thing to do is to report this discovery, but the next day, the wildfire has grown out of control, prompting an evacuation order. Entering the cave, Henry learns the truth about Brian: he died in the park, and his corpse has remained in the cave ever since. When the tracking unit suddenly begins beeping, Henry tracks down the signal and finds a backpack with a key to the locked door in the cave. Although the pair consider destroying the site, Henry decides it’s better to leave, but the site is set on fire anyways. He later breaks in and locates a tracking unit. An unknown assailant knocks Henry out, but recalling a memo he read on the clipboard, Henry heads over to the location and finds a government research site. A few months into his posting, a small wildfire starts, and things become increasingly difficulty when Henry comes across a clipboard detailing his conversations with Delilah. Brian and Ned had known Delilah, but one summer, left abruptly and never returned. As Henry explores the park further and finds a backpack belonging to Brian Goodwin, Delilah explains that Brian was the son of Ned, an outdoorsman who frequented the park and drank to escape his experiences in the Vietnam War. He and Delilah learn more about one another during their communications via radio: when a relationship went south, Delilah left her old life and became a fire lookout. During his tenure as a fire lookout, Henry initially starts out with tasks like helping Delilah investigate a downed power line and picking up supplies. Near his watchtower, Henry encounters a shadowy figure and returns to finds his tower trashed. En route back to his tower, Henry passes through a cave with a locked door. On his first day, Henry is introduced to Delilah, another lookout who tasks him with tracking down some illegal fireworks. In 1989, Henry decides to take a job as a fire lookout in Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, after his wife develops dementia.
